We would like to notify you of a maintenance window on our VPS nodes to ensure long term stability of the nodes. This window will be today 18/01/2011 at 22:00GMT until 18/01/2011 22:30GMT to ensure minimal impact during off-peak hours. We appologise for the short notice of this work however it is essential that we complete this work urgently to ensure no further disruption to services. During this window we expect services to be offline no longer than 15 minutes. This is to complete essential work on the KSPVPS02 and KSPVPS03 nodes which is outlined below. Users on KSPVPS01 however will be unaffected by this work and will not see any downtime.
KSPVPS02:
Replace a failed hard disk drive to restore the RAID array to full redundancy. Unfortunatley on this node the disks are not hot swappable so it is necessary to shut the server down to replace the disk however we expect the shutdown and boot to take around 10 minutes at which point VPS's will be offline. We will try to save the state of all VPS's however so upon boot they will start back in the state before the shutdown.
KSPVPS03:
A couple of users have mentioned to us that their VPS's have lost network connectivity for periods of up to 10 minutes. We have now found this to be related to depleted memory on the host node due to a kernel argument for Xen which restricts the amount of RAM available to the host node. We will be changing this kernel argument as well as adding more RAM to ensure that these network problems are not posible again. The recommendation from Xen is 512MB for the host node per 8GB of memory which is what we have currently based the existing kernel arguments off however it appears that monitoring and control panel items have meant this is not enough for the node and is causing the network issues on some VPS's due to insufficient memory for the netback driver. As with the work on KSPVPS02 it is necessary to shut the server down for these changes however we expect the shutdown and boot to take around 10 minutes at which point VPS's will be offline. We will try to save the state of all VPS's however so upon boot they will start back in the state before the shutdown.
